BGL Meeting Minutes 

Date: February 25, 2013 Time started 7:05pm  

Officers Present

Secretary’s report:

·       New Ending  Balance: $3,639.59

·       Expenses include trail passes, D Hale’s banner and decals,  Steele.

·       We have 60 trail passes in hand. 287 sold thus far

Trail Reports:

·       Gill:

o   Still needs more snow.

o   New groomer works well, though tough on hills.

o   Logging is in process on the trails to Oakridge Golf course. Take care when traveling on these trails.

o   Gary attempting to contact Arcticat regarding sled parts and repair. Dave Annear may have the parts Gary needs.

o   Teacher from Gill Elementary school asking local snowmobilers to pack snow behind school for sledding.

o   Discussed possible reroute of trails where Tyler is logging.

o   Continues discussion of trails by cement company. Will continue surveying land with concerns of the existing swamp in that area. 

·       Bernardston:

o   New trail is cut and groomed. A big thank you to all of the volunteers involved!!!

o   Reports of late night sledding. Will hold off on putting up additional signs to see if situation continues. Golf course is already marked for 11:00 pm curfew.

o   Trail behind Phelps, someone has gone off the trail and ridden on their pond. Land owners complained. Trail has now been clearly marked and access to pond roped off.

o   Bridge by Letourneau’s needs repair.

·       Leyden

o   Trails are good.

o   David Brooks spoke with landowner who had concerns about speed and snow in the landowner’s driveway. Suggested that the club look into reroute of trail behind the landowner’s house.

o   Trail on Hunt Hill not broken.

o   Trail by Glabach is great. No complaints from landowners regarding speed. Riders are complying with the posted speed limit signs.

o   West Vt trails needs work. At least 4 bridges are needed. Possible reroute of trail needed.

Old Business

·       Swamp mats (1 dozen) may be sold. Dave Annear negotiating price.

·       Summer Picnic Raffle discussed

o   Drawing to be at the Summer BGL Annual Golf Tourney

o   Ernie will print out flyers and tickets, to be ready for the next monthly BGL meeting or will discuss a place for pick up at the next meeting. Discussion will continue at next meeting as to who will collect the prizes, etc.

·       Bob Mason to research availability of trusses at the end of Pond Rd

New Business

·       A huge thank you to the volunteers for the Kiwanis sledding party!!!! It was a great success.

·       Dave Annear still has a bundle of misc. wood from Cowls Lumber available at his house.

·       Recap from SAM’s meeting by Brad

o   SAMs has hired a marketing firm to explore ways to enhance the expo and increase attendance.

o   Recommended that clubs reduce the number of signs posted on trails, using the basic signs.

o   SAMs is considering all clubs having a uniform price for trail passes. Our clubs raised concerns about the impact that would have on family passes and early bird pass prices.

·       Suggested to have EPO monitor the Leyden Fire Pit trail due to reports of high speed riders.

·  Expenses include trail passes, steel, stamps.

·  We made $376 from the Swap Meet.

·  We have 60 trail passes in hand

Trail Reports:

Gill:

·      Trail signs have been posted by the Gill elementary school. Doug Smith spoke with principal to confirm trail is available for use.  School requests that we minimize use of trails during school hours. Reminder there is no smoking or drinking on school property.

·      Railroad crossing is no longer permitted. High speed trains scheduled to run in the near future. Brad will contact the Greenfield train yard for more specifics.

·      Alternate routes for tracks by Charlie’s Repair, possible east of Gill road, bridge by Agway by Deans Construction. Permission to use land obtained by Jason Deane, however, it may be swamp land; too wet to use.  

·      Repair to bridge still needed by Charlie’s Repair, however repair is pending railroad trail reroute issue.

·      Trail behind Windmill is fine.

·      Cows still in fields, fences still up.

·      Doug Smith will check out property behind Cooks.  

Bernardston:

·      Hell’s Kitchen update, one year contract signed by the Dept of Fish and Wildlife. 5 year contract being discussed. Reminder that any deviation from this contract makes the contract null and void. 3 bridges needed to be constructed to code, so as to be in compliance. OK to use Snows property for access. Conservation Committee asks that we notify them when we go out to do trail work.

·      Aluminum bridge by Tylers needs repair; face wood/decking needs to be replaced.

·      Trails behind Brooks is clear.

·      Trails though Pratts is clear.

·      Discussed possible reroute of trails crossing Rail Road by Steel Shed. Possible crossing over bridge and along Kringle property. 

Leyden

·      Bridge on East Hill trail has been replaced. Old bridge removed and trail moved.

·      Swamp mats placed (big thank you to Mike Snow for all of his help). 2 additional mats needed to complete the trail.

·      Possible reroute of trial at bottom of Frizzle Hill. Dave Annear will research.

 

Old Business

·  Cowls Lumber still willing to provide wood at discount in return for posted signs with their name on them. Dave Annear spoke with owner. Lumber currently being collected.

·  Toys for Tots collection ongoing. Members encouraged to make a donation. Marcia Miller will bring any donations to the next SAM’s meeting.

·  Swap meet future. Was discussed if worth holding the annual swap meet due to low profit this year. Was determined that it will be continued as it provides exposure for the club. Possible additional raffles will be held at next year’s Swap Meet. i.e a raffle of a cord of wood.

 

New Business

·  Bear Cat at Dave Annear’s not running. Will not idle. Bob Mason will pick it up to work on.

Trail Reports:

· Gill:

o   Tree has destroyed bridge by Charlie's Repair.  Requires extensive repair. Need 30' pole.

o   Trail close to Augustine's has large mud hole. Options to fill hole discussed. Possible use of swamp mats (currently stored at Llewelyn's). Needs to be determined how to transport swamp mats due to large size and weight.

o   Principal of Gill Elementary school needs to be approached to confirm use of trail by school. No problems anticipated.

 

· Bernardston:

o   Hell's Kitchen update, Brad is still waiting for approval from the Dept of Fish and Wildlife for his proposal. He advised that the Conservation Committee will approve if the Fish and Wildlife Dept does.  Brad also trying to get the mini truck approved for use on the trails for transport of materials for bridge and trail repair.

o   Jack will contact Clyde Beckwith for approval to use wood chips for trail behind the  Hollywood.

o   Brad will research about Rail Road crossings for snowmobiles.  May be an issue for new trail system/service for the railroads.

· Leyden

o   Jim spoke with Paul Zimmerman regarding his property. Trails on this property will be available for use this season.  Jim advised Paul of Land Trust's customary restrictions regarding motorized use, and Paul is open to keeping snowmobiling available on the land with details to be determined. 

o   Tree is on Butler trail, needs removal.

o   Fire pit is cleaned up and ready to go. Needs a new picnic table.

o   Harron's land past Frizzle Hill may be a good candidate for swamp mats.

o   Need to touch basis regarding Crowtworst, confirm trail is still available.

 

Old Business

·       Rubber matting is still available. Suggested use for wear padding on bridges. Contact Brad for pick up.

·       Swap Meet:

o   Planned for November 11, 2012.

o   Advertising: Brad advertised this in the SAM's Magazine and contacted Bobby C at WHAI for radio spot. Add to run from Tuesday to Sunday. Cost was $300.

o   Volunteers will meet at Steel Shed at 7 Sunday morning.

o   Food sold will include Burgers, hot dogs, chips, soda, coffee, pot luck items and Dave's famous fries.

o   SAMs junior reps will hold bake sale

o   There will be a 50/50 raffle

o   Sam's trailer already at the Steel Shed.

o   Toys for Tots collection at swap meet. Members encouraged to make a donation. Marcia Miller will bring any donations to the next SAM's meeting

·       Swamp mats- still needs to be determined the best way to transport them. Dave Annear may have 5th wheel camper frame. Still open discussion for other options.

 

·       Cowls wood: Dave Annear will speak with the owner this week regarding donation or discount of wood. Cowls still willing to donate wood in exchange for the posting of a sign on our bridges with Cowls Lumber name in it.  

 

New Business

Maps of BGL's trails have been enlarged. Trail map taken from the SAMs map and enlarged to show the trails for BGL only. Questions raised about possibly asking local restaurants and stores if they want to be identified on the map. Possible donation made to BGL for this service. This is to be discussed at another meeting.

·       Next two Club meetings to be rescheduled due to upcoming holidays. Next Club meetings to be held November 26th and December 17th (if there is snow. If no snow, Brad will send out e mail/text advising of next meeting time)

Trail Reports:

·       Gill: No report

·       Leyden:

o   Trash barrel placed out by Cary, land owner of trail. Dave Annear to contact Cary to discuss who will be responsible to emptying the trash can; the club or the land owner.

o   Butler trail is clear, however, one tree is a candidate to be removed. Dave Annear will contact land owner to discuss possible removal of the tree.

o   Brad will send out e mail with contact information regarding land trusts and establishing permanent easements for trails.

o   Jim Nielsen will contact Zimmerman regarding establishing an easement prior to the sale of his property. This property is crucial to our trail system and must be preserved in some way.

o   Land for sale on George Lamb Rd. Brandon Grover will contact Mike Pratt for details.

o   Tree clearing crew needed for trail on David Brooks property. Possible trees down on trail.

·       Gill: No report. Recruits needed to represent Gill.

·       Bernardston:

o   Still no word on wood chips for trail behind Hollywood. Beckwith still to contact landowner for permission to put wood chips on trail.

Old Business

·       Brad is still working with State Conservation agency to keep the Hell's Kitchen trail open.

·       Groomer for Gill; the parts are ready. Jeff will contact people to help repair the groomer.

·       Bernardston Parade a great success. Our entry looked terrific. A big thank you to all the volunteers who helped put it together and walk by the float during the parade.

o   Brad made executive decision to order 100 BGL logo stickers to hand out with our flyers to parade spectators. Flyers gave a brief description of what our club is about as well as information about our upcoming Swap Meet in November.
